TMJ Disorder

TMJ Disorder

Do you know about this or you heard about this ?

Bruxism, Clenching of the jaw, grinding of the teeth, acute or chronic pain syndromes of head, neck shoulders, back or entire body, trigeminal neuralgia, dizziness, orientative and perceptive disorders and more…. Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorder involves conditions affecting the temporomandibular joint, jaw muscles and nerves on one or both sides of the head that result in jaw, face, and head and neck pain.

The pain and discomfort caused by TMJ disorders may be severe, can be either intermittent or constant, and may last for many years. TMJ symptoms may recur during stressful times, whether good or bad.

Who Suffers from TMJ problems ?

It is assumed that as much as 65 to 85 percent of the population will experience some type of TMD symptom in their lifetime.
TMD affects twice as many women as men, and is most prevalent among people between the ages of 30 and 50.

  • Treatment

Typically the first line of treatment will be the use of a splint.

The TMJ splint is worn to reduce stress on the jaw, allow the muscles to function optimally and/or to cover the deflective interferences affecting the bite so that the lower jaw can be repositioned into the socket properly.

If a splint helps relieve the pain, it is possible that your bite or parafunction was causing the problem.

In our clinic we use the IPR system and we have more than 12 years experience with IPR.

What is IPR ?

IPR – intra – oral pressure dependent registration is PC based registration technique which allows dentists and orthodontists to find out the correct mandible position.

An unphysiological change of the mandible (lower jaw) may cause several health related problems within the dental systems and outside.

If the position of the mandible finally determined after registration, the software can calculate the ideal or “physiologic” position of the jaw.

This new position will be the base for the subsequent therapy.

In majority of the cases the pain free therapy will consider in time limited wearing from a special splint, which the patient can wear day and night without any restrictions after some days of adoption.

Most of the patients feel after short time big changes, the pain disappears or is much less than before, the muscles are more relaxed and well balanced, decreasing lot of symptoms.

After 4-6 weeks it is recommended to repeat the registration, to adapt or adjust the splint to the new situation.

The metal based splint will allow also a longer therapy for more difficult situations or to stabilize the new position until the comprehensive dental treatment, which will achieve the new and physiologic mandibular position for long-time.

You shouldn’t wait until appearance of health problems; the IPR is perfect to prevent all mentioned problems.

After every orthodontic treatment (lot of teeth movement) will be absolutely indicated to check the position with the IPR.

Before you will start extensive prosthodontic work like crowns, veneers or denture it will be necessary to check the bite, the position of the lower jaw to the upper jaw to prevent mistakes and functional problems later.

Essential is the use from IPR System for implant based crowns or denture to prevent any further problems with the implants.
